A feature wall can be one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to transform your home.

The ‘typical’ feature wall usually consists of a beautiful wallpaper, a pop of colour or even a standalone painting. However, you can actually create a feature wall using what you already have in your home. Here’s just a few dos and don’ts we’d recommend first…

Keep the feature wall clutter free

Using your possessions for a feature wall can help keep the rest of your home decluttered from bits and pieces. However, by no means should you then just move everything up onto the feature wall shelving. Clutter will make the whole room feel chaotic and it’s certainly not the look you’d be going for.

Instead, be selective on the pieces you choose and find other places for anything that doesn’t quite make the cut.

No more than three items smaller than the size of your fist

A golden rule when choosing pieces for your feature wall; ensure there are no more than three items that are smaller than the size of your fist. Not only will they begin to look like clutter, but they’ll also get lost in the wall’s overall design.

Be particularly careful when it comes to choosing which objects will go where. You won’t want two super small pieces next to each for example. Instead, vary the sizes between each one to create an overall balance, which you’ll be able to notice by eye.

Vary the heights between each of your possessions

As well as varying the sizes of your possessions, it’s important to vary the heights of the objects, as well as the heights of the shelving they’re on. Again, this is to ensure that there is an overall ‘balance’ to the wall.

You’ll notice from the project pictured, we’ve actually created smaller gaps which were left empty. This was to ensure the wall didn’t become overwhelmed with bits and pieces, showing that each item has a purpose.

Try and work within the desired colour palette of the room

Just how you would choose a wallpaper or wall paint that works with the overall colour palette of the room, the same should be done when it comes to your possessions.

As you can see above, the neutral tones of the sofa are reflected in the choice of shelving and frames. Pops of colour have been used in the decorative cushions and the room’s feature rug. These have been plucked from the home owner’s most prized posters and collectables.

Make sure the wall reflects your personality

Ultimately, creating a feature wall is an expressive process, turning a bland space into a room which reflects your personality.

Be bold and be brave! The best thing about a personalised feature wall is that you’ll have a story to tell about each of your possessions. These can sometimes go unnoticed when dotted around the home.

This project was for the father of our very own Logistics Manager, Vicki Reeve. We needed to accommodate a unique curation of movie memorabilia and therefore decided to make a feature wall from them.

As well as creating this bespoke feature wall, we completely remodelled the whole apartment. We created an open plan kitchen and living space, as well as a fully-fitted bedroom/dressing room as well as three en-suites.
